About Me

I'm Justin Richard, a knife maker from Southern New Hampshire. My knife-making journey began in 2018 with a wood belt sander and hand tools. I love combining art and utility, creating knives that are both visually stunning and highly functional. The challenge of balancing these elements makes each piece truly rewarding.

With a wide range of steels and handle materials, I enjoy the creative freedom in designing knives that excel in both aesthetics and performance. My passion for making things started with Legos and home projects as a child and continued through college, where I focused on Communications and Photography.

In 2023, I was proud to be accepted as a juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen, marking a significant milestone in my craft.

Justin was amazing to work with! I had a special project in mind and he absolutely nailed it! His communication was great, his knowledge and skills in his work were outstanding! It was a real pleasure having him make a custom knife. He’s a true artist! Thank you!

Justin agreed to put a handle on a knife blank and make a sheath for it. He priced the project fairly asked questions during the different phases of the build and delivered a great finished product with quick turn around. I would not hesitate to buy from him in the future.

I found a ratty old knife in a family storage unit. Did some research and found it was from a family member in WWII, and wanted to have it restored. It was in pretty rough shape. I found Richard Custom Knives and Justin was great from initial contact through the whole process. I just got it back and it looks amazing. I would highly recommend Justin and Richard Custom Knives! Thank you!

Justin fixed out two favorite kitchen knives when we were about to throw them out. He not only redid the handles but sharpened the blades and they are now better than they were when they were new. Awesome guy to work with! Reasonably priced and very responsive. We would recommend Justin to anyone and will be back for more knives!

Justin is a fantastic maker. Definitely my most satisfying knife purchase to date. Didn't shy away from working with m390 and made one beautiful knife. I hope to have many more from him in the future.

Amazing maker! Got an 8” chef knife in nitro-v with an amazing Burled box elder handle. Perfect ergonomics on this knife, it just hugs your hand. Saying it’s slicey is like saying Michelangelo could paint. Beautifully thin where it needs to be and thick where it needs to be. My favorite chef knife by a very good margin. Would recommend every time!

Recently took delivery from Justin of his new slippy design with a (deep) 3” blade. The fit, finish, edge, ergonomics, walk n talk, and blade centring are all really good straight out of the box. As soon as you hold it, open it up, close it etc you know that you have hold of a quality tool. To me it feels like halfway between a gentleman folder and a field knife. Perfect.
There is more, but it’s harder to explain. My last two slippys have been a Lionsteel Dom and a Boker Barlow. I consider both to be near perfect examples of what they are, and that reasonably can’t be faulted. They have efficiency, however, they do to my mind also have a certain lack of character or individuality. My new Richard knife has that subtle almost intangible characteristic. It’s hard to explain but it’s definitely there and it enhances the edc experience.
Bottom line. This tool ticks all the boxes and is excellent value for money. Highly recommended.
